Bridging the Gap: Clearing Up the “Race-Based Medicine” Controversy

The AMA recently declared that “race-based medicine is wrong” and some race-based decision-making formulas, like the one for the GFR, have been abandoned. Unfortunately, not applying racial considerations to screening with a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test has resulted in higher prostate cancer mortality in the Black population. We will look at many of the race-based misconceptions that impact the quality of our care as well as examine when considering race in our decision-making is beneficial.
