Biography

Jay K. Varma, MD is the Deputy Commissioner for Disease Control at the New York City Health Department where he directs all infectious disease programs for the city. After graduating magna cum laude with highest honors from Harvard, Dr. Varma completed medical school, medicine residency, and chief residency at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. From 2001-2011, he worked on emerging infectious diseases for CDC with postings in Atlanta, Thailand, and China. Dr. Varma has authored over 100 scientific manuscripts, six essays, and one book. In 2010, he was recognized as the US Public Health Service Physician Researcher of the Year and, in 2011, was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, the highest award in the US Public Health Service.
