Biography
He received his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degrees from M.S. University of Baroda India, completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and his Gastroenterology Fellowship at the University of Arizona in Tucson. Dr. Sharma’s research has focused on Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal cancer gastroesophageal reflux disease and evaluating novel imaging techniques for upper and lower gastrointestinal diseases. He has over 300 publications including original articles and book chapters related to these topics and has presented at major national and international meetings. Dr. Sharma has recently written an invited review article on Barrett’s esophagus in the New England Journal of Medicine. He recently co-edited a book entitled “Barrett’s Esophagus & Esophageal Adenocarcinoma.” Dr Sharma has had publications in high impact journal including the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Gastroenterology, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Gut. He serves as a reviewer for most of the major medicine and gastroenterology subspecialty journals. Dr. Sharma is a Fellow of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American College of Physicians, and has received the American College of Gastroenterology Governors Award for Excellence in Clinical Research. He is a member of the editorial board of several international journals including the American Journal of Gastroenterology, Endoscopy, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Diseases of the Esophagus, Journal of Digestive Endoscopy, Indian Journal of Gastroenterology, World Journal of Gastrointestinal Oncology , Journal of Digestive Endoscopy , Advances in Therapy, European Review for Medical and Pharmacological Sciences, Gastroenterology Research and Practice and the World Journal of Gastroenterology. Dr. Sharma has been interviewed by the Wall Street Journal and Newsweek. Dr Sharma has been actively involved in the major national and international gastroenterology organizations and is the Chair of the Publications Committee of the World Gastroenterology Organization. He is currently a member of the Council of the American Gastroenterological Association and a member of the research committee of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Sharma is also the former chair of the Membership Committee of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and of the American College of Gastroenterology Public Relations Committee, and of the American Gastroenterology Association Education and Training committee. Dr. Sharma has been a visiting professor and delivered Grand Rounds at many prestigious universities including the Mayo Clinic, Duke University, Univeristy of North Carolina, University of Arizona, University of Nebraska, University of Alabama, Medical College of Wisconsin, University of Utah, Temple University, University of Michigan, Medical College of Virginia, etc. He has also provided the state of art lectures at the national congresses of the South African Gastroenterology Society, the British Society of Gastroenterology and the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and “Meet the Professor” sessions at Digestive Diseases Week. Dr. Sharma has also been invited as a guest speaker at conferences conducted by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), American College of Surgeons (ACS) and American College of Pathology, and the American College of Physicians (ACP). Recently Dr. Sharma has been asked to serve as the course director for the major annual post graduate courses of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG).
