Biography

Dr. Scherger is Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He is also Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs of MyOwnMD, a new medical software company specializing in knowledge management tools. Dr. Scherger is nationally known as an expert on the redesign of health care using the tools of information technology and quality improvement. As part of this focus, he is involved in the Care Delivery Policy Project at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. From 2001-2003, Dr. Scherger served as Founding Dean of the Florida State University College of Medicine in Tallahassee, FL. For five years before that, he chaired the Department of Family Medicine and was the Associate Dean for Primary Care at the University of California Irvine College of Medicine. Dr. Scherger, who was in full-time private practice for many years, was chosen in 1989 as Family Physician of The Year by the American Academy of Family Physicians and the California Academy of Family Physicians. In 1992, he was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Scherger has authored more than 200 medical publications and has given over 600 presentations. A graduate of the University of Dayton and the UCLA School of Medicine, Dr. Scherger completed a family practice residency at the University of Washington and received a master's degree in public health from the same institution in 1978.
