Associate Professor of Obesity Medicine, Department of Surgery Division of Minimally Invasive Surgeons of Texas (MIST) University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Houston, Texas Sameer Murali, MD, MSHS, is an associate professor of obesity medicine in the Department of Surgery, Division of Minimally Invasive Surgeons of Texas, at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston in Houston, Texas. From 2011 to 2021, Dr. Murali served as the adult weight management and bariatric surgery physician lead at the San Bernardino County Medical Service Area for Southern California Permanente Medical Group (SCPMG), and from 2016 to 2021, he was SCPMG’s regional lead physician for bariatric surgery. Dr. Murali earned his medical degree at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, where he also completed a residency in internal medicine. Additionally, he has earned a master’s degree in health services research from the University of California, Los Angeles. Dr. Murali is board certified in internal medicine, obesity medicine, and lifestyle medicine, with nearly 15 years of experience in treating obesity with lifestyle interventions and pharmacotherapy. Dr. Murali is a member of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, the Obesity Action Coalition, and the Obesity Medicine Association. He has presented at the American Gastroenterological Association Annual Scientific Meeting, the ObesityHelp National Conference, TEDx, and the Texas Association of Bariatric Surgery Annual Meeting. Dr. Murali’s research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including Annals of Internal Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, Obesity, and Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases. In 2020, he received the Physician Exceptional Contribution Award from Kaiser Permanente for his work in defining the mortality risk of obesity from COVID-19 infection.
