Biography

Dr. Fan practices rheumatology and clinical immunology in North Hollywood, California. He went to medical school in Canada at the University of Manitoba, internship and residency in internal medicine at L.A. County-USC Medical Center and fellowship in rheumatology at UCLA School of Medicine. He joined the Division of Rheumatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA in 1976 and was promoted to Clinical Professor of Medicine in 1991. In 1981, together with colleagues at UCLA, Dr. Fan reported the first cases of the AIDS syndrome. He was previously Chief of Rheumatology at the West Los Angeles Veterans Administration Medical Center and has been visiting professor and lecturer in Finland, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines and Thailand. He has published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Arthritis & Rheumatism, Journal of Immunology and many other journals and has written chapters for standard textbooks of rheumatology. He is a consultant for Best Doctors of America and serves on the advisory board of the International Journal of Rheumatology. He was past chair of the Southern California Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and past president of the Southern California Rheumatology Society. He is the recipient of awards and honors for teaching, patient care, voluntary services and patient advocacy including the Arnold P. Gold Foundation Humanism in Medicine “Gold Doc” Award in 2013. In April 2017 his fellow rheumatologists in California honored him with the California Rheumatology Alliance Life Time Achievement Award and in September 2019 the UCLA Division of Rheumatology awarded him the Lifetime Teaching Award for outstanding contributions as noted researcher, clinician and teacher.
