Biography
Dr. Eric J. Eross is a fellowship-trained neurologist specializing exclusively in headache medicine. To date, he has successfully treated over 15,000 patients suffering from an array of headache-related disorders. Dr. Eross has the honor of being one of an elite group of specialists having successfully completed a two-year headache medicine fellowship at the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. He completed his residency in neurology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA). He completed his internal medicine internship at Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Dr. Eross obtained his medical degree from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine (OUCOM) and his undergraduate Bachelor of Science degree in neurobiology from Allegheny College. He has the distinction of being the first neurobiology graduate (a degree he created) from Allegheny College. Prior to his current position as the director of the Phoenix Headache Institute (PHI), Dr. Eross was the founder and director of the Scottsdale Headache Center in Scottsdale, AZ. Immediately prior he has served as a neurology consultant with the CORE Institute, Arizona Neurological Institute and the Pain Center of Arizona. He has also served as an Associate Neurology Consultant, headache medicine specialist and Clinical Instructor at the Mayo Clinic and Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Dr. Eross has expertise in a multitude of therapies effective for even the most complicated and medically-resistant of headache sufferers. His patients have access to the most advanced and comprehensive therapies currently available including: complex management/monitoring of pharmaceuticals, nutraceutical/herbal preparations, chemodenervation/Botox® injections, dietary management, headache trigger discovery and avoidance, stress reduction/management, sleep optimization, osteopathic manipulation, massage therapy, physical therapy, psychological counseling, biofeedback, occipital nerve blockade/stimulation, trigger point injections, trigeminal nerve blockade/ablation, sphenopalatine ganglion blockade, transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), vagal nerve stimulation, lumbar punctures, blood patches, cervical epidural injections, cervical facet injections and cervical radiofrequency ablations. Dr. Eross believes in a comprehensive, patient-centered approach that stresses patient empowerment through education, diverse and cutting-edge therapies and ongoing compassionate care. Dr. Eross’ areas of special interests include: chronic migraine, the use of Botox® and anti-CGRP monoclonal antibody therapies for the prevention of migraine, the relationship between sinus disease and migraine, headache in children and the elderly, idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri), headaches secondary to cerebrospinal fluid leaks and indomethacin responsive headache syndromes (IRHS). He is recognized by his colleagues as an innovator and his “out-of-the-box” thinking has led to the development of the novel, patent-pending product Gliacin®, which is now used throughout the world to prevent a multitude of headache conditions including hemicrania continua and migraine. He also is the Founder and President of Glia Sciences, INC., a Scottsdale, AZ based company with the mission of, “minimizing headache-related suffering through the advent of novel, safe, scientifically-based and clinically-proven natural products.” Glia Sciences, INC. is also the sponsor of the unique educational program Headache Freedom University (HFU) which provides hope and empowerment through comprehensive patient education. Dr. Eross is actively involved in headache-related research and has served as lead investigator in over sixty clinical trials while at Mayo Clinic, ANI Research, the MORE Foundation and Glia Sciences, INC. He has presented his progressive treatment concepts and cutting-edge therapies on an international stage including Washington, D.C., Vancouver, London, Berlin, Rome, Valencia and Kyoto. Dr. Eross has many academic interests and endeavors. He currently serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Midwestern University, Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine and as a faculty member of the family practice residency program at Honor Healthcare. He serves as a teacher and mentor to students, residents and fellows who frequently rotate through his headache center. Likewise, he is an instructor (through ongoing lectures and physician preceptorships) on the proper use of Botox® for the prevention of chronic migraine. He is recognized as a national thought leader and educator and has given over one thousand formal lectures on various topics in headache medicine. Likewise, He has published over fifty headache-related abstracts, papers and book chapters. He has served in the past as a Clinical Science Contributing Editor to the journal Headache Currents and as a reviewer for the journals Headache and Cephalalgia. He is an active member of the American Headache Society and the International Headache Society.
