Biography

Dr. Layla Abushamat, MD, MPH is an endocrinologist and assistant professor in the Section of Cardiovascular Research at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX. Her area of clinical and research expertise is in the prevention, treatment, and management of cardiometabolic disease, including a focus on diabetes, obesity, and lipids. She has a special interest in lifestyle therapies, particularly medical nutrition therapy and physical activity, including the evidence behind them, patient perceptions, and provider self-efficacy. Dr. Abushamat was recently awarded an NIH NIDDK K23 to study the association of erythritol, an artificial sweetener that is also made by the body, to vascular disease and heart failure risk in a multi-ethnic population and to assess its metabolism in people with and without type 2 diabetes and/or obesity when fasting and in response to oral erythritol.
