Biography

Gretchen Youssef, MS, RD, CDE, Program Director of the MedStar Diabetes Institute is an experienced Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) who serves diabetes clinical, education, research, and quality improvement initiatives across the MedStar System. Her areas of interest and expertise include diabetes self-management education to improve health outcomes, community-based diabetes prevention programs and translational research addressing diabetes primary prevention and best practices for type 2 diabetes care management. She served as program manager in the MedStar Health Research Institute’s NIH Diabetes Prevention Program. She committed to improving lives of people with diabetes especially those who are challenged by low health literacy, socio-economic and mental health barriers which often prevent them from receiving optimal care. She is the 2019 American Diabetes Association President, Health Care and Education.
