Todd L. Savitt

Biography

Dr. Todd L. Savitt is an historian of medicine. He received his bachelor's degree from Colgate University (1965) and his MA (1970) and PhD (1975) in history from the University of Virginia. After teaching history of medicine and medical humanities at the University of Florida College of Medicine from 1976 to 1982, Dr. Savitt joined the faculty of the Department of Medical Humanities at East Carolina University (ECU) School of Medicine, where he is a professor and currently teaches history and medical ethics. Until recently, he chaired the History of Medicine Grants Panel for the National Institutes of Health and serves as Secretary-Treasurer of the American Association for the History of Medicine. In 1988, Dr Savitt organized the ECU's Medical Readers' Theater (MRT) program, which he continues to coordinate. He has described this innovative approach to professional development in the book, Medical Readers' Theater, which also contains a compilation of stories by celebrated writers, scripted for use in MRT (University of Iowa Press, 2002).
