Biography

Dr Sartor is Distinguished Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Medicine, Director of the UNC Multidisciplinary Center for IBD Research and Treatment, and Director of the Broad Medical Research Program at the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA). Dr Sartor is a board certified gastroenterologist specializing in IBD and a basic scientist, and he runs a large laboratory with funding from foundations and the National Institutes of Health. His research interests include the pathogenesis of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, microbial/genetic/immunologic interactions in the intestine, and the application of basic science knowledge to the improvement of IBD diagnosis and treatment. He has published over 325 research articles and reviews and edited 5 books. Dr Sartor currently serves on the Microbiome Advisory Committee of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) and was previously an AGA Council member as Chair of the Immunology, Microbiology & Inflammatory Bowel Diseases Section. He previously served as the CCFA’s Chief Medical Advisor, National Board Member, Chairman of the National Scientific Advisory Committee, and Chairman of the Senior Research and Training Award Review Committees.
