Biography

Dr. Blankstein is the Associate Director of the Cardiovascular Imaging Program, Director of Cardiac Computed Tomography, Co-Director of the Cardiovascular Imaging Training Program, and a Senior Physician in Preventive Cardiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is also a Professor of Medicine and Radiology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Blankstein’s clinical expertise focus on the evaluation and management of coronary artery disease and prevention of cardiovascular disease. As a multimodality imager, he has extensive expertise in cardiac CT, nuclear cardiology, and cardiac MRI. Dr. Blankstein has authored over 600 articles and text-book chapters, including several national guidelines. In 2022 and 2023 he was awarded the distinction of Highly Cited Researcher (Top 1% in field) by His research has focused on how to use the results of cardiovascular imaging tests in improving patient outcomes. He is frequently invited to talk, both nationally and internationally on topics related to preventive cardiology, imaging coronary atherosclerosis, and cardiac sarcoidosis. Dr. Blankstein’s research focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of coronary atherosclerosis. He is the PI of the Mass General Brigham YOUNG MI registry as well as the Mass General Brigham Lp(a) registry. Dr. Blankstein is a past-president of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and has served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Preventive Cardiology and the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. He is the chair of the ACC Imaging Section Leadership Council, and is a past member of the ACC Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease Leadership Council. Dr. Blankstein is an Associate Editor of JACC: Cardiovascular Imaging.
