Biography
Dr. Joan Chen is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan, Director of the Esophageal Motility Program, and Clinical Director of the Esophageal Service Line. She completed an advanced esophageal fellowship following her Internal Medicine residency and GI fellowship at Northwestern University. She joined the University of Michigan faculty in 2013. Her clinical and research interests include swallow disorders, gastroesophageal reflux disease, eosinophilic esophagitis, and esophageal motility disorders. Her research on refractory GERD was funded by an institutional grant and the Rome-AGA pilot grant. Dr. Chen participated as a working group member of the Chicago Classification v4.0 and the endoluminal functional lumen imaging probe working group and has coauthored several clinical guidelines on use of esophageal physiology testing, reflux monitoring in PPI non-responders, and the clinical practice update on extraesophageal gastroesophageal reflux disease.
