Biography
In June 2010, Roy Altman, MD, world-renowned KOL in the fields of Analgesics, Immunology, and Rheumatology joined Olatec’s Drug Development Team and Scientific Advisory Board. He is a recognized pioneer in the field of Osteoarthritis, with his longstanding success in the clinical development of topical and oral therapies to treat arthritic patients. Dr. Altman has been contributing leading expertise to the clinical development of OLT1177 in the design and conduct of Olatec’s human clinical trials. Dr. Altman has over 20 years of clinical experience in Rheumatology with a special interest in Osteoarthritis. He is Professor of Medicine, Division of Rheumatology and Immunology at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is Professor Emeritus at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, where he was Chief of Rheumatology and Immunology as Professor of Medicine, with a secondary appointment as Professor of Orthopedics. He is retired from the Miami Veterans Administration Medical Center, where he was chief of rheumatology and clinical director of the Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC). Dr. Altman is a founding board member and past President of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International. He started and for 16 years was Editor-in-Chief of that organization’s official journal, Osteoarthritis and Cartilage. He was co-editor of Seminars in Arthritis and Rheumatism for over 40 years. In addition, Dr. Altman has contributed to the medical literature with over 200 juried manuscripts and over 60 book chapters. With Dr. Roland Moskowitz, he edited the fourth edition of the text Osteoarthritis: Diagnosis and Management. He initiated the journal Cartilage for the International Cartilage Repair Society, where he continues as Associate Editor. Dr. Altman is a member and Master of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), in addition to membership in several other medical societies. He is a former delegate to the American Medical Association, and board member of the Paget’s Disease Foundation. The Osteoarthritis Research Society awarded him the Clinical Science Award in 2001 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Osteoarthritis in 2007. Dr. Altman holds an MD from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
