Overview

Calcium is an essential mineral that plays role in skeletal mineralization, hormone secretion, nerve conduction, muscle contraction, intracellular signaling and several other biological functions. Hypercalcemia affects approximately 1% of the population worldwide and can present with variable clinical symptoms depending on the severity of hypercalcemia as well as rate of increase in serum calcium. Hyperparathyroidism and malignancy account for 90% of the cases of hypercalcemia. This presentation will focus on understanding calcium homeostasis with deep dive into understanding hypercalcemia and hyperparathyroidism management.

Learning Objectives

  • Develop understanding of calcium homeostasis
  • Summarize strategies for evaluating hypercalcemia
  • Review pathophysiology and current practices for management of hyperparathyroidism
